How to measure for a countertop

Collect these tools:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pen & paper
  • Calculator
Identify the shape of your main countertop:

  • L-shaped
  • U-shaped
  • Rectangular
Special Notes:

Make note of any isolated countertop areas (like an island).

Sketch:

On the paper, make a rough sketch of your kitchen floor plan. Include all areas with countertops.

Measure length:

Measure and record the longest side of your countertop, measuring along the back of the countertop.

L-Shape
6.

If you have an L-shaped countertop, measure and record the L in both directions.

U-Shape:
7.

If you have a U-shaped countertop, measure and record the longest length (against the wall) as well as both legs of the U.

Measure Depth:
8.

Measure and record the depth of the countertop, going from the front edge to the back wall.

Detached Countertops:
9.

Measure and record any detached countertop areas, as mentioned in Step 3.
